NEW YORK, NY – The 32nd annual Canstruction New York, the highly anticipated annual design competition and exhibition, is back at the Winter Garden in Brookfield Place. This event features teams of architects, engineers, and builders who craft jaw-dropping sculptures entirely from unopened cans of food. The exhibition showcases these intricate, large-scale sculptures, which will ultimately be donated to City Harvest, a New York City-based food rescue organization, to support local communities in need.
Canstruction offers multiple ways for visitors to get involved and learn more about the cause. Visitors contributed by bringing canned food donations to the Winter Garden. These donations, along with the cans used in the sculptures, will go to City Harvest to support their mission of reducing food insecurity in New York City.
On October 31, a live build event featured DeSimone Consulting Engineering constructing one of the sculptures. This event provided onlookers with a firsthand experience of the intricate process and skill involved in creating these structures.
For younger visitors, Canstruction has made the event interactive and educational. Children could pick up activity worksheets to explore the sculptures in a fun and engaging way, making the exhibition an enjoyable learning experience for families.
Attendees could vote for their favorite sculpture in the People’s Choice award. This allowed the public to directly support and celebrate their favorite designs while connecting with the teams who built them.
Additionally, guided tours were available on select dates, offering a behind-the-scenes look into the artistic and technical details of each sculpture, as well as insights into the charitable impact of Canstruction.
On November 4, a panel of distinguished judges — including Gia Mainiero of Dattner Architects and Alastair C. Elliott from TYLin | Silman Structural Solutions — reviewed and selected winners in categories like Best Original Design, Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Best Meal, Most Cans, and two honorable mentions. Canstruction New York operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, originally established by the Society for Design Administration (SDA). The SDA’s mission is to promote the development of management and administrative professionals in architecture, engineering, and construction through education, networking, leadership opportunities, and resources.
