NEW YORK, NY – The 33rd edition of the annual Outsider Art Fair (OAF) illuminated New York City’s art scene from February 27 to March 2, 2025. This lively celebration of self-taught art, Art Brut, and outsider art masterpieces turned the Metropolitan Pavilion, located at 125 West 18th Street in Manhattan, into a dynamic international showcase for creative originality. Acclaimed as the premier event for self-taught artists, the Outsider Art Fair brought together 66 exhibitors from 40 cities in 9 countries worldwide.
Founded in 1993 by Sanford L. Smith, the Outsider Art Fair was created to highlight self-taught artists, Art Brut, and outsider art—genres that have often been overlooked by mainstream galleries. Over time, the fair has cultivated a dedicated collector base, attracting private collectors, institutional buyers, and art enthusiasts.
Since its inception, the Outsider Art Fair has played a crucial role in integrating outsider art into the broader contemporary art world. The term Art Brut, coined by Jean Dubuffet in the 1940s, originally referred to works created outside traditional artistic institutions. About Wide Open Arts
The Outsider Art Fair was founded by Sanford L. Smith in New York in 1993, making it the first art fair focused exclusively on self-taught artists. It has since become a major platform for showcasing works by celebrated masters and contemporary artists like George Widener, Susan Te Kahurangi King, Shinichi Sawada, Christine Sefolosha, and Luboš Plný. Known for its unconventional approach, the fair played a pivotal role in creating a devoted collector community and securing outsider art’s place in the contemporary art world.
In 2012, the fair was acquired by Wide Open Arts, a company founded by gallerist Andrew Edlin. Under new ownership, the fair’s first edition in January 2013 received widespread acclaim and saw attendance more than triple. Building on this momentum, the fair made its debut in Paris in October 2013, helping to revive the city’s strong tradition in the art brut field. After two years at Hôtel Le A, a boutique hotel near the Grand Palais, the Paris edition of the fair moved in 2015 to Hôtel du Duc, a grand 19th-century hôtel particulier in the Opéra district. In 2018, the fair expanded further, relocating to its current home at Atelier Richelieu in the 2nd arrondissement.

- Aarne Anton/Nexus Singularity (New York), Cavin-Morris Gallery (New York), and Marion Harris (Connecticut and New York), all of whom have been longstanding exhibitors at the Outsider Art Fair since its inception, will be making their return. Furthermore, after a five-year hiatus, Henry Boxer (London), an original exhibitor, will also rejoin the event.
Other notable booth highlights include:
- Maurice Sullins (1910–1995): Acrylic works at Hana Pietri (Chicago), abstracted landscapes referencing the old masters, transforming familiar motifs into his own dreamlike painterly expression.
- Takashi Nemoto (b. 1958): Presented by Akio Nagasawa Gallery, paintings resembling enlarged scenes from comic books by the manga artist.
- Feheley Fine Arts (Toronto): Specializing in art from the Canadian Arctic, featuring contemporary works by Inuit artists.

The Fair’s Curated Space: Follow My Moves by Mateus Nunes
The 2025 Outsider Art Fair presented Follow My Moves, an exhibition of Brazilian self-taught art, curated by Mateus Nunes, a São Paulo-based curator, writer, and postdoctoral researcher. The exhibition explored the visual and oral histories of Brazil’s native communities and the African diaspora, offering insights into the country’s artistic and educational development from 1950 to the present.
It featured works by notable self-taught Brazilian artists, including Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato (1900–1995), Chico da Silva (1910–1985), Conceição dos Bugres (b. 1914), and Maria Lira Marques (b. 1945). These artists, influenced by cultural traditions, also engaged with academic art, reshaping traditional aesthetic norms.

О Wide Open Arts
