NEW YORK, NY — On Saturday, May 17, the streets of Manhattan transformed into a vibrant stage as the 19th Annual Dance Parade brought the city to life. More than 10,000 dancers, artists, and spectators joined the celebration. This year’s theme, Freedom to Dance, highlighted the power of dance as both expression and a right worth defending. The parade united dancers from every background by providing a bold, inclusive platform to showcase diversity and community pride.
The event began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:30 AM at 17th Street and 6th Avenue, the parade launched at noon. Along the route, dancers stopped at Astor Plaza’s Grandstand. There, each group performed for 40 seconds, offering the crowd a thrilling glimpse into their unique style. In total, over 150 dance groups participated. They showcased more than 100 genres, including traditional, contemporary, and cultural performances.
The festivities transitioned into DanceFest at Tompkins Square Park — a free outdoor event open to the public. Attendees enjoyed live performances, hands-on dance workshops, and complimentary dance classes throughout the afternoon.
Now in its 19th year, the Dance Parade stands as a celebration and a cultural declaration. With every beat, step, and spin, it reclaims the streets as places of belonging, joy, and freedom. By turning New York City into a stage for unity and self-expression, the Dance Parade reaffirms a powerful truth: when communities dance together, they move the world forward.
