Overview
NEW YORK, NY — From July 26 through August 23, New York City streets transformed into vibrant public spaces filled with culture, movement, and connection. Summer Streets 2025 expanded to all five boroughs, covering 22 miles and more than 400 blocks.
Residents and visitors walked, biked, and celebrated in car-free corridors. Streets once crowded with cars showcased fitness classes, cultural performances, interactive art, and family-friendly activities.
Open Streets and Summer Streets together redefined the city’s largest public resource—its streets—into inclusive spaces for learning, recreation, and business. Applications were open for communities to lead their own Open Street initiatives through NYC DOT. Special features included the NYRR Start Line Series, public art such as Collective Bloom, and gourmet food trucks serving diverse cuisines. Rest stops offered everything from live music to relaxation areas, welcoming people of all ages. Parking, traffic, and transit changes supported the celebrations, with free Citi Bike passes encouraging sustainable mobility.

Open Streets Program Foundations and Governance
NYC Open Streets transforms city streets into dynamic public spaces that support culture, commerce, and community engagement. The program thrives through partnerships that include community groups, schools, business associations, and houses of worship. Public Realm Programming offers free activities for all ages and abilities, creating inclusive spaces for every New Yorker.
The Public Space Equity Program assists underserved neighborhoods by helping community partners maintain safe, high-quality, and inviting public spaces. In 2024, NYC DOT formalized Open Streets rules, defining eligibility, partner roles, and program management standards. The official Notice of Adoption is published on NYC Rules, ensuring public transparency and accountability.
Expansion and Vision
Summer Streets 2025 expands across all five boroughs, spanning 22 miles and 400 blocks to celebrate New York City’s 400th year. The program will run on five consecutive Saturdays: July 26, August 2, August 9, August 16, and August 23, 2025. Hours are extended from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., providing more time for participation. Summer Streets remains free and open to all, rain or shine.
Activities and Cultural Programming
Fitness programming will include yoga, Zumba, and guided runs, alongside the NYRR Start Line Series introducing beginners to community running. Public art installations such as the Collective Bloom sculpture and large NYC letters will animate the streets.
Cultural performances, live theater, and music will take place across boroughs. Families can enjoy children’s play zones and themed activities such as the FIFA Skyline to Shoreline Road Tour.
Sponsors including Coca-Cola, Siggi’s, ALOHA, Stonyfield Organic, MUSH, RYZE, Chamber of Mothers, Yerba Madre, and Remitly will host booths, tastings, and interactive experiences. Rest stops will also feature dog parks, craft workshops, and guided walking tours.
Mobility and Incentives
Lyft and Citi Bike will provide free day passes for classic Citi Bike rides. Riders can redeem them in the app using the code LYFTSUMMER25, while supplies last.
Attendees are encouraged to walk, jog, or cycle along car-free corridors. Subway service on the 4, 5, 6, A, B, C, and D lines will remain unchanged, though some buses will be rerouted.
Visitors are advised to wear comfortable shoes, carry water, bring cash, and arrange meeting points in advance due to large crowds.
Food and Local Business Integration
Summer Streets serves as a platform for local businesses to connect with their communities and encourages both residents and visitors to shop locally while enjoying the festivities. Classic New York foods such as hot dogs, pretzels, and falafel remain central to the Summer Streets experience. Gourmet food trucks will offer fusion tacos, artisanal sandwiches, Korean BBQ, empanadas, and international cuisines. Vendors will also provide fresh juices and smoothies made from locally sourced fruits and vegetables.
Wrapping Up
Summer Streets 2025 highlights the strength of community, the richness of culture, and the value of reclaiming public space. Each borough will showcase its character, offering New Yorkers the chance to see their city in new ways.
The program demonstrates how thoughtful planning can connect neighborhoods, promote local business, and improve quality of life. Looking forward, these initiatives may inspire permanent innovations in how public space is shared and experienced.
Rain or shine, the city belongs to the people, not the cars. For more information, visit the official website of NYC DOT Summer Streets.
